In religion and philosophy, ensoulment is the moment at which a human or other being gains a soul. Some belief systems maintain that a soul is newly created within a developing child and others, especially in religions that believe in reincarnation, that the soul is pre-existing and added at a particular stage of development.

The dominant theory is that the soul enters at conception. Some teach that the soul does not enter the fetus until 40 days after conception. All Jewish and Christian and Muslim teachings affirm that the fetus has a soul long before birth.

Growing up in evangelical — largely Baptist — churches, I was taught that the most important thing in interpreting the Bible is context. In context, Psalm 139 isn’t about babies, or conception, or when life begins. It’s about how God knows our deepest, most hidden feelings, knows where we run away to, knows us better than anyone else.

[some people]... 'assert that human life begins at conception, and therefore the fertilized egg possesses all constitutional rights of a living person.

The bible declares that God breathed life into man's body (Genesis 2:7). At least a dozen more verses indicate that breath is synonymous with life. This scriptural truth completely contradicts the personhood dogma.

Why did God, who allegedly loves the unborn and hates abortion, kill so many unborn children, adolescents and adults throughout biblical history? Why do fundamentalists pursue a political agenda that is thoroughly refuted by God's word?

The truth is that the bible does not endorse the fundamentalist Christian assault on women's reproductive health.'
