WHAT IS A TRADITIONAL HEALER
IN 2022, ONE OF MY FRIENDS APPROACHED ME WITH A REQUEST. SHE HAD SPENT THE GARDENING SEASON IN THE INDIGENOUS GARDEN IN HER AREA. SHE TOLD ME A BEAUTIFUL STORY ABOUT HOW HER GROUP WAS RECOGNIZING & APPRECIATING THE SUNFLOWER DURING THAT SEASON.
FOR ME, THAT BEGAN A JOURNEY OF RESEARCH & DISCOVERY THAT I WANTED TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL.
MY MIXED HERITAGE FRIEND ASKED ME TO MAKE A SHIRT TO MEMORIALIZE THIS LESSON FOR THE GARDENING GROUP, WHILE SHE WROTE A SMALL INTRODUCTION TO THEIR IDEA.
Aaniin. Boozhoo. This growing season as our community worked together, the sunflower, as traditional healer for the land, became a healing presence for each of us.
As they grew, and the flowers opened up, the joy each of us experienced from the garden grew too.
We wear the sunflower to honour its work among us during the growing season of 2022. And the food it will provide to our people and four legged relatives during the winter months.

These lyrics will touch you differently than they touched me, but I'm hoping that you will be challenged to look inward and to walk this life in a good & kind way.
